Cherry Green

Hi, I’m Cherry — and yes, that is my real name. I was born with it, teased for it, grew into it, and now proudly publish under it. It’s memorable, a little quirky, and very me.

I’m a Queensland-based British author who writes darkly funny mystery fiction with heart, humour, and a touch of chaos. My debut novel, Joking Aside, follows private investigator Lee Appleton through the London comedy circuit — a world of sharp tongues, big egos, buried secrets, and jokes that really should’ve stayed in someone’s notebook.

Part of the reason I write that world so vividly is because I once lived in it. In my twenties, I spent a chapter of my life doing stand-up comedy — a wild, formative, and occasionally bruising experience. I wouldn’t go back to that stage now, but it left me with a sharp understanding of the personalities, insecurities, and backstage tension that simmer beneath a comedy club’s surface. These days I prefer exploring that world safely on the page.

Before turning to writing, I spent more than a decade working in business analysis and project management across universities, tech, and research organisations. I love structure, problem-solving, and asking far too many questions — handy skills when plotting murder mysteries.

My writing is character-driven, emotionally warm, and always threaded with a dark little wink. I’m drawn to flawed protagonists, messy humans, unlikely friendships, and stories where humour sits right next to heartbreak.

When I’m not writing, you’ll find me doing strength training, learning Spanish at absurdly early hours, or walking with my rescue animals in tow. I also drink an ungodly amount of coffee.

Thanks for being here — and welcome to my writing world.

Joking Aside

When star comedian Dan O’Mara vanishes without a trace, private investigator Lee Appleton is dragged into the cut-throat world of stand-up — a scene where egos are inflated, tempers are short, and everyone’s hiding something.

As Lee chases the truth through dingy backrooms, backstage rivalries, and comics who’d kill for a laugh, she begins to realise the biggest joke of all: in this world, the punchlines aren’t the only things that can hurt you.

A sharp, darkly funny mystery about ambition, secrets, and the dangerous cost of keeping people laughing.
